Linux Mint

Linux Mint is none other than the first distribution based on Ubuntu. I recently wanted to try this new distribution, just to see, but she has conquered me.

So I swapped my Ubuntu Intrepid Ibex to me quite disappointed, for a Linux Mint Elyssa based on Ubuntu 8.04 (which fontion very good).

This distribution thus enjoys all the benefits of Ubuntu by offering some improvements.

The main one is certainly the elegance! Indeed, the default theme of Linux Mint is very successful and quite comprehensive.

Mint Elegance

But the outfit does not make the monk, I suggest you dig a little deeper. And start with the gnome menu replaced by the Mint Menu, offering a menu from the Windows XP and the Vista.

Mint Menu

At first glance it may seem daunting for some ... after it's a matter of taste, but I'm pretty quick. Remember that it is always possible to return to the traditional menu.

Then move to Mint Update, the update manager of the distribution. This is pretty well designed as categorizes the different updates depending on their type: updates Certified (source Linux Mint / Romeo (unstable)), the updates approved by Linux Mint (Ubuntu source / other), recommended updates (untested source Ubuntu / Other).

Mint Update

Install Mint, is a complementary application with the web portal of applications of Linux Mint. This portal allows you to install a single click application. Mint. There is such Wine, VirtualBox, K3b, Opera, etc..

Add to that the possibility of installing the application directly from Getdeb.net . Finally Install Mint provided a graphical interface for installing applications via apt. Of course, Synaptic is still present in the distribution.

Mint Install

We also find that Mint Backup allows you to make backups of the / home and therefore the profiles of the various installed applications.

Linux Mint is also a distribution that provided all the video codecs / audio and Firefox plugins needed to take full advantage of its operating system. Until now I had nothing to install. The latest version of Flash is part of the lot.

Finally Mint offers a service to upload file for sharing on the internet ... but it suffers from a severe lack of using their platform computer (1GB shared between all users)

Mint Upload

More significant, whatever works under Ubuntu / Debian runs on Mint. So there is no need to look far when you have a concern, simply rely on these communities!

I would add that exite versions KDE, Xfce, Fluxbox Mint.

So why install Linux Mint? If like me migrating to Ubuntu 8.04 Ubuntu 8.10 went wrong, it's a very good alternative to install Elyssa based on Hardy.

Otherwise, know that a version based on Intrepid Ibex (Felicia) is currently in RC1 and then when it was released, you will have a slightly more mature and stable.

And finally, as the Linux world is a world of diversity, so you can assert your difference, while maintaining a completely functional!
